Youth gets six-year jail for Chandigarh Sector-17 underpass stabbing

A local court has sentenced a 25-year-old to undergo six years of rigorous imprisonment for stabbing a person in Sector 17 two years ago.

The police had registered a case against the accused, Balwant Singh, a resident of Uttar Pradesh, on the complaint of a Harpreet Singh, a resident of Badheri village.

According to the complainant, who worked as petrol pump operator, the incident took place at the underpass, Sector 17, around 9.30 pm on November 27, 2023.

He told the police that he spotted the accused stabbing a man who was lying on the ground multiple times. When he rushed to the aid of the victim, identified as Rakesh, the accused ran away towards him with the intention to attack him. He was, however, apprehended with the help of other passers-by.

The victim was rushed to the hospital while the police launched an investigation. A chargesheet was filed against the accused under sections 307 and 324 of the Indian Penal Code.

The counsel of the accused argued that he had been falsely implicated in the case.

On the other hand, Hukam Singh, public prosecutor argued that the prosecution has proven the case beyond a shadow of doubt. He also argued for exemplary punishment for the accused considering the serious nature of the crime.

After hearing of the arguments, the court sentenced the accused to undergo six years of rigorous imprisonment after convicting him under 326 of Indian Penal Code. The court has also imposed a fine of Rs 30,000 on the convict.
