A local court has convicted 22-year-old Paras Arora of attempt to murder charges. Paras had hit ASI Ramesh Chand of the UT police at a naka in Sector 20 three years ago. The court will pronounce the quantum of sentence on Saturday.
The police had registered an FIR against the accused on the complaint of constable Parvesh who along with ASI Ramesh Chand and other officials were deployed at the naka on April 10, 2021.
Parvesh alleged when Ramesh Chand signalled the car driver to stop, the latter accelerated it and hit Ramesh before fleeing the spot. The ASI was rushed to the GMCH-32 from where he was later admitted to the PGI, and during treatment he died due to Covid. Paras was arrested. Finding prima facie case, he was chargesheeted for offences punishable under Sections 307 and 333 of the IPC. Accused’s counsel argued he was falsely implicated in the case.
Hukam Singh, public prosecutor, assisted by Yadwinder Singh Sandhu, advocate for the complainant, argued the prosecution had proved the case. After hearing the arguments, the court convicted the accused. “It is established that the accused had driven his car on the wrong side and when he signalled to stop he hit the victim and caused grievous injuries to him,” the court said.
