Zirakpur, July 17
The Sunday morning of Zirakpur residents’ went in draining out rainwater from the ground floor and streets, while the afternoon saw no electricity in houses.
After bracing waterlogging in most parts, residents had tough time facing a six-hour power outage, which affected Baltana, Pabhat, VIP Road, Nagla, Peermuchalla, Dhakoli and other parts of Zirakpur. In some parts, residents experienced power cuts for the third day in a row. PSPCL officials said a new sub-station was being readied for the Baltana area due to which some cuts had to be scheduled. The work was almost over and there would be no more scheduled power cuts, they said.
Basements and ground floors of housing societies in the low-lying areas of Baltana were filled with rainwater, while streets remained waterlogged till late in the afternoon. “Zirakpur residents are being tested owing to regular waterlogging and outages. It seems the entire system has crumbled. Politicians and government officials are silent, leaving residents to their plight,” said Lakhwinder Sharma, a Baltana resident and a former Panjab University employee.
The Zirakpur Municipal Council had made no preparations for the monsoon season, said residents. Cleaning of drains had not been undertaken before the rainy season, said an irate Peermuchalla resident. The VIP Road, too, saw puddles and stagnant water.
