CPM seeks Rs 2,000 cr relief for rain-ravaged state from Centre

Expressing concern over the loss of life and property due to heavy rainfall in the state, the State Committee of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) has urged the Central Government to immediately provide at least Rs 2,000 crore as emergency relief fund along with other necessary resources to the state.

The party has also asked the Centre to commission scientific research and formulate a comprehensive policy to address and prevent such disasters in the future, which are increasingly being caused by climate change. It said the state government should immediately convene an all-party meeting to coordinate disaster response, to carry out relief operations on a war-footing and to constitute a task force under the leadership of the Chief Secretary, Prabodh Saxena to ensure coordination among various departments.

The CPM assured full cooperation with the government in relief efforts. “Although damage has occurred across the entire state, Mandi, Kullu, Kangra, Shimla, Sirmaur, and Chamba districts have suffered the most severe losses in terms of life and property.” Sanjay Chauhan CPM state secretary.

He claimed that relief operations are still not being carried out effectively in many parts of the state.
