PEOPLE across the globe have been using and abusing one or the other intoxicant over centuries. An intoxicant/drug is a substance that alters the functions of the body. Some intoxicants even have a social and religious sanction. Thus, there is a need to understand that drug addiction and abuse is a multidimensional phenomenon embedded in social, cultural, economic and political ground realities; it is a systemic problem.
