URBAN development in Punjab is happening at a rate faster than the rest of the country. As per the 2011 Census, 37.48 per cent of the population in Punjab lives in cities as against the national 31.15 per cent. Niti Aayog estimates show that 42 per cent of the population of Punjab was living in cities in 2023. As a result, the cities of Punjab are expanding at a rapid pace, with Amritsar, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Patiala and Mohali growing faster than the others.
