Amid growing public concern over the drug menace, two drug addicts were recently apprehended by vigilant residents in separate incidents and handed over to authorities in Muktsar district.

In the first case, a girl was found in an inebriated condition on Abohar Road earlier this week. She had reportedly fled from the Muktsar Civil Hospital, where she was undergoing treatment for substance abuse. Some passersby noticed her erratic behaviour and alerted the authorities, who then took her back to the hospital.

In another incident, a young man, allegedly a drug addict, was caught after reportedly stealing clothes from a shop in the town. Local residents and shopkeepers intervened and managed to apprehend him before handing him over to the police.

The youth reportedly told the public that he had sold off his 8.5 acres of land to fund his addiction.

Police officials have been regularly appealing to the public for cooperation in the battle against drugs, urging citizens to report suspicious activity or addicts in distress.

Some officials have lauded the prompt action taken by the public in these recent cases, reiterating that community involvement is essential to eradicating the drug problem from society.

Meanwhile, the state government’s campaign ‘Yudh Nashian Virudh’ (war against drugs) is underway. The initiative focuses on a multi-pronged approach involving strict law enforcement, public participation, and de-addiction support. Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav has set a deadline of May 31 to significantly curb the drug menace in the state.
