Complaint against Babbu Maan
Phagwara: Muslim activists, led by Rafeeq Mohammad of Khalwara Gate here, on Wednesday lodged a complaint with the Phagwara police against renowned Punjabi singer Tejinder Singh Maan, alias Babbu Maan, that the singer used objectionable remarks against Muslim women in his song. The activists submitted a memorandum to SP Manwinder Singh and handed over the objectionable songs CD to the officer. They demanded immediate action against the singer. The CD had been sent to the forensic lab for analysis and examination, said the police. OC
Two killed in road accidents
Phagwara: Ranjit Singh (58), a resident of Prem Nagar here, killed on the spot when his cycle hit by a speeding four-wheeler between Phagwara and Chiherru on the National Highway on Thursday. He was working as an electrician in Lovely Professional University. The police have arrested the driver and impounded the vehicle. A case has been registered against the driver. Meanwhile, in another mishap a female pillion rider, identified as Anu (30), a resident of Kherra village, killed on the spot when the bike she was riding on suddenly skidded off the road on Thursday afternoon. She was taken to a hospital but was declared brought dead. She is survived by three daughters. Her husband lives in the UAE. The police have registered a case. Her body has been kept in the mortuary of the Civil Hospital here. OC
BJP protests hike in power tariff
Phagwara: Several activists of the Bhartiya Janta Party led by district president Rakesh Duggal and Mayor Arun Khosla on Thursday staged a protest against the power tariff hike in the state. The protesters held a rally before the SDM office here, which was addressed by BJP Phagwara president Paramjit Singh, Rakesh Duggal and Arun Khosla, who alleged that the state government had failed on all fronts. SAD leader and SGPC member Sarwan Singh Kular also addressed and supported the protesters. Later, the protesters submitted a memorandum to SDM Gurvinder Singh Johal. OC
Villagers protest outside SP office
Phagwara: Residents of Madhopur village here held a demonstration and sat on dharna before the SP office on Thursday. They were protesting against the registration of false cases against 11 villagers by the police, under political pressure. The protesters led by BSP senior leader Dr Sukhbir submitted a memorandum and demanded impartial enquiry in the matter. Talking to the media, BSP leader alleged that in a scuffle between a village Panchayat member Parwinder Kaur and her supporters several farmers were was booked by the police instead of nabbing the woman and her supporters. SP Manwinder Singh assured the protesters that he would enquire the matter and the dharna was lifted. OC
