In a touching display of cross-border sportsmanship, a Pakistani cricket fan has gone viral after supporting India during the ICC Women’s ODI World Cup Final.

The gesture came as India defeated South Africa by 52 runs to clinch their maiden Women’s World Cup title.

India’s victory marked a historic moment in women’s cricket, as the team lifted the trophy after previous final losses in 2005 and 2017. Led by captain Harmanpreet Kaur, the side delivered a commanding performance, with Shafali Shah starring both with bat and ball and Deepti Sharma playing a crucial supporting role.

Pakistani supporter goes viral

The viral moment came when Arshad Muhammad Hanif, a Pakistan cricket fan, was seen singing India’s national anthem alongside his family before the final. The video, widely shared on social media, showed the group wearing Pakistan jerseys while passionately cheering for India.

Posting on Instagram, Hanif wrote: “A proud moment as Sunidhi Chauhan sings the Indian National Anthem before the India vs South Africa Women’s ODI World Cup Final! Goosebumps all around. Let’s cheer loud for our women in blue — bring the cup home.”

Following India’s triumph, he shared another message extending his congratulations and goodwill: “Many congratulations to Team India on becoming the Women’s ODI World Cup Champions! Sending best wishes and love from Pakistan. I hope one day young Pakistani girls will rise and become champions like Harmanpreet Kaur!”

To honour the team’s remarkable achievement, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced a cash reward of Rs 51 crore for players, support staff and selectors.

In an official statement, the BCCI said: “To honour this unprecedented success, the BCCI has announced a cash reward of Rs 51 crore for the players, support staff and selection committee, in recognition of their remarkable performance, dedication and contribution to the nation’s sporting glory.”
