The Delhi Police have arrested a married couple allegedly involved in several cases of snatching and vehicle theft in outer Delhi’s Rani Bagh area, officials said on Monday.

The accused, identified as Rahul, alias Mota, (30) and his wife, used to first steal two-wheelers, use them to commit snatchings and robberies and then abandon the vehicles to avoid being tracked by the police.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Outer) Sachin Sharma said the couple was arrested following a probe into a snatching incident reported on June 25.

“A woman approached the police stating that while she was on her way to an aerobics centre near Rishi Nagar, a man and a woman on a scooter targeted her. The woman, who was wearing a pink suit and riding pillion, snatched her gold chain while the man sped the vehicle away,” DCP Sharma said.

A case under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita was registered at the Rani Bagh police station, and a special team was formed to crack the case. Investigators scanned footage from over CCTV 300 cameras in and around the crime spot and possible escape routes.

In one of the CCTV recordings, officials identified a scooter matching the description. “When we traced its registration number, it was found to be stolen from Nihal Vihar on the same day when the snatching incident took place,” Sharma added.

Through CCTV trail, the police tracked the movement of the suspects up to Nangloi, where a local informer identified them as Rahul, alias Mota, and his wife, both residents of Sultanpuri. After receiving specific inputs that the couple was hiding in Hastsal, Uttam Nagar, raids were carried out leading to their arrest.

The police recovered a stolen scooter used in the crime and the snatched gold chain from their possession. Further investigation revealed that 10 criminal cases were registered against Rahul, while his wife has five prior cases against her.
