As the region grapples with a severe heat wave, health experts are warning residents of the potential health risks associated with the extreme temperatures. The doctors have advised the residents to take ample precautions and keep themselves hydrated.

Civil Surgeon Kirandeep Kaur said that the heat wave could lead to a range of health issues, including heat exhaustion, heat stroke and dehydration. She stated that vulnerable populations such as the elderly, children and people with pre-existing medical conditions were at a higher risk.

“Heat waves can be deadly, and it’s essential to take precautions to avoid heat-related illnesses,” said Kirandeep. She added that people should stay hydrated, stay cool and stay informed about the latest weather forecast.

To stay safe, residents are advised to drink plenty of water and other fluids to stay hydrated, stay indoors during the hottest part of the day (11am-3 pm) and use cooling devices like fans and coolers. They should also wear light-coloured, loose-fitting clothes and avoid engaging in strenuous activities during the hottest part of the day.

Residents should avoid venturing out during the hottest part of the day unless absolutely necessary and not ignore symptoms of heat-related illnesses such as dizziness, nausea and headaches. They should never leave children or pets unattended in a vehicle or exposed to direct sunlight and avoid overexerting themselves during the hottest part of the day.
