13 seats witness nail-biting contest

The BJP achieved a historic win in the Delhi Assembly elections, securing 48 seats. However, the contest in 13 of the 70 constituencies was a nail-biting affair, with a margin of less than 5,000 votes separating the winners from their rivals.

The race was particularly close for several high-profile leaders, including former CM Arvind Kejriwal, BJP’s Parvesh Verma and Atishi, all of whom faced tough competition. Out of the 13 seats with low-margin victories, the BJP claimed nine, while AAP won four.

Notably, three constituencies were decided by a margin of fewer than 1,000 votes - Sangam Vihar (344), Trilokpuri (392) and Jangpura (675). BJP’s Chandan Kumar Choudhary, Ravi Kant, and Tarvinder Singh Marwah won these tight contests. One of the most shocking defeats came in Jangpura, where AAP’s Manish Sisodia lost by just 675 votes.

Three seats had a margin gap between 1,000 and 2,000 votes — Timarpur (1,168), Rajinder Nagar (1,231) and Mehrauli (1,782). BJP candidates Surya Prakash Khatri, Umang Bajaj and Gajender Singh Yadav secured victories in these constituencies.

Bajaj notably won the Rajinder Nagar seat against incumbent AAP leader Durgesh Pathak. This was the same constituency where three UPSC aspirants tragically drowned last year due to waterlogging.

Two seats — Delhi Cantonment (2,029) and Malviya Nagar (2,131) — had margins between 2,000 and 3,000 votes. AAP’s Virender Singh Kadian triumphed in Delhi Cantt, while BJP’s Satish Upadhyay emerged victorious in Malviya Nagar.

In the 3,000 to 4,000 vote margin category, Greater Kailash (3,188 votes) and Kalkaji (3,521 votes) also witnessed tight races. BJP’s Shikha Roy won Greater Kailash by defeating AAP’s Saurabh Bhardwaj, while outgoing CM Atishi secured her Kalkaji seat by defeating BJP’s Ramesh Bidhuri.

The final category saw three constituencies where the margin was between 4,000 and 5,000 votes —Patel Nagar (4,049), New Delhi (4,089) and Ambedkar Nagar (4,230). AAP’s Parvesh Ratn won Patel Nagar, while BJP’s Parvesh Verma made headlines by defeating AAP’s Arvind Kejriwal in New Delhi with 30,088 votes, marking a major upset. In Ambedkar Nagar, AAP’s Ajay Dutt secured a win.
