1981 classic ‘Umrao Jaan’ returns to cinemas in digital avatar

The timeless cinematic gem Umrao Jaan (1981), known for its poetic elegance and depiction of Awadh’s culture, has made a grand return to theatres in a digitally remastered 4K version. Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri, legendary director Muzaffar Ali and other dignitaries attended the premiere, celebrating the re-release of the iconic film that continues to captivate audiences across generations.

Recalling the film’s enduring charm, Minister Puri posted on X: “Delighted to revisit the aura and grandeur of a bygone era at the premiere of the remastered version of the iconic Umrao Jaan, re-released in cinemas with the legendary filmmaker Muzaffar Ali Ji and several other friends and dignitaries. This celluloid jewel is a must-watch for aficionados of period tales and culture, students of cinema and cinegoers of every generation.”

Describing the film as “a prayer wrapped in a ghazal”, Puri praised its unmatched portrayal of tehzeeb, poetry and artistry. He lauded Rekha’s memorable performance in the titular role, along with Shahryar’s lyrical poetry, Khayyam’s haunting music and Asha Bhonsle’s soulful renditions.

The film, which won four National Awards, tells the story of a tawaif and poet in 19th-century Lucknow. Rekha’s nuanced portrayal of Umrao Jaan has long been considered one of her finest performances, cementing the film’s legacy as a cinematic masterpiece.

The restoration project is part of a larger initiative by the Ministry of Culture, the National Film Archive of India (NFAI) and the National Film Development Corporation (NFDC) to preserve and revive Indian cinematic heritage for contemporary and future audiences.

Directed by Muzaffar Ali and produced by SK Jain & Sons in collaboration with Integrated Films, Umrao Jaan is now back on the silver screen from June 27, offering a rare opportunity for audiences to experience the film’s grandeur in a new digital avatar.
