1984 anti-Sikh riots: Sirsa backs prosecution demand for death penalty to Sajjan Kumar
BJP MLA Manjinder Singh Sirsa has strongly supported the prosecution’s demand for death penalty to Sajjan Kumar in connection with the 1984 anti-Sikh riots.
Sirsa condemned the brutal nature of the crimes, particularly highlighting the murder of 18-year-old Tarundeep and his 50-year-old father, Jaswant Singh, who were reportedly burned alive while their family members watched in horror.
Sirsa, who is also the National Secretary of the BJP, said: “The prosecution has demanded death penalty in this case, acknowledging the horrific brutality of these killings. Sajjan Kumar must be held accountable for such a heinous act. I hope the court delivers a death sentence on February 21.”
The BJP leader also took the opportunity to criticise the Congress, pointing out that despite their attempts to shield Kumar, justice was catching up with him. “This is a lesson for the Congress. No matter how much they tried to protect Sajjan Kumar, the law is now holding him accountable. Congress leaders are now facing life sentences and even death sentences for their role in these atrocities,” Sirsa stated.
The remarks come as the trial of Sajjan Kumar continues to unfold. The case is being closely watched, with a potential landmark decision on the horizon. This is the second conviction in a case reopened in 2015 following the establishment of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) by the Ministry of Home Affairs to revisit the 1984 anti-Sikh riots cases.
