The Delhi Police have apprehended 25 Bangladeshi nationals, living illegally in India, after a coordinated operation across Delhi and Uttar Pradesh, it said on Thursday.

The crackdown began when two men — Hasan Sheikh (35) and Abdul Sheikh (37), both residents of Satkhera district in Bangladesh — were intercepted in Delhi. They had allegedly entered India along with others through the Khulna border in West Bengal, a police official said. During interrogation, the duo admitted to their illegal entry into India, and revealed that several of their associates were staying in Kanpur Dehat, Uttar Pradesh.

A police team conducted a late-night raid in Kanpur Dehat on September 20, and arrested 23 more Bangladeshi nationals. None of the 25 detainees possessed valid travel or residential documents. Preliminary profiling showed they were working in unskilled jobs such as ragpicking and farm labour, the official added.

All the detainees had been shifted to the MCD Community Temporary Detention Centre at Sarai Kale Khan, where deportation proceedings were underway, the official said.
