A 29-year-old man tried to immolate himself due to mounting debt in the Patel Nagar area of Central Delhi, the police said on Tuesday.

The victim, Vishal Singh of Baljeet Nagar, Patel Nagar, is undergoing treatment at Safdarjung Hospital. Around 10 pm on Monday, the police received a PCR call regarding a person admitted to BLK Hospital with burns. After getting information, a team rushed to the hospital to record the victim’s statement.

During investigation, it was found that Singh incurred a loss of nearly Rs 3 lakh in his business and was living in a rented accommodation, an official said.

He had been unable to pay the rent on time and was facing constant pressure from money lenders. So, he tried to immolate himself by pouring petrol on his body, the official added.

His wife and neighbours rushed him to a hospital. He was later referred to Safdarjung Hospital.
