50K additional CCTVs to be installed in Delhi

Strengthening women’s safety in the Capital, the newly formed Delhi Government has announced the installation of 50,000 additional CCTV cameras, adding to the existing 2.8 lakh cameras already operational across the city.

“Keeping in view the security needs, especially for women, it is proposed to install 50,000 new cameras in Delhi,” Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said while presenting the Budget on Tuesday.

Despite the existing CCTV infrastructure, several women, including students and working professionals, continue to feel unsafe while travelling at night. A past field report by The Tribune found that surveillance cameras have not significantly eased their concerns.

In another key announcement, the government will introduce travel cards for women to replace the existing pink ticket system for free bus rides. The move aims to curb corruption and ensure greater transparency in the scheme, CM Gupta stated.

The initiatives reflect the government’s push to enhance women’s security and mobility in the Capital. However, their implementation and effectiveness will be closely watched, as past measures have not entirely addressed women’s safety concerns.
