71-yr-old advocate who tried to attack CJI Gavai released

Bar Council of India suspends him from practice

The advocate, who tried to hurl a shoe at Chief Justice of India BR Gavai, was released by the Delhi Police after nearly a three-hour interrogation.

The accused, identified as Rakesh Kishore (71), a resident of Mayur Vihar, was quickly stopped by the security team and handed over to the Supreme Court’s security unit.

The incident took place when CJI Gavai was conducting proceedings in Court No. 1 of the Supreme Court. The advocate went to the dais and removed his shoes and attempted to throw it towards the CJI.

However, the Supreme Court administration did not file any formal complaint against him. As a result, the police did not take any legal action, and the lawyer was released.

His shoes and documents were also returned. According to officials, the accused lawyer holds several association cards.

“Sanatan ka apmaan nahi sahenge (We will not tolerate the insult of Sanatan),” the man was heard shouting while being removed from the court.

The Bar Council of India (BCI) suspended advocate Rakesh Kishore from practice with immediate effect.

In a letter issued to advocate Rakesh Kishore and the Bar Council of Delhi, BCI chairperson Manan Kumar Mishra said Kishore’s conduct was inconsistent with its Rules on Standards of Professional Conduct and Etiquette and the dignity of the court.

“It appears that at about 11.35 am on October 6, 2025, in Court No. 1 of the Supreme Court of India, you i.e. advocate Rakesh Kishore, enrolled with the Bar Council of Delhi vide enrolment nos. D/1647/2009, removed your shoes and attempted to hurl them towards the Chief Justice of India during ongoing proceedings, whereupon you were detained by security…In view of the foregoing, you i.e. advocate Rakesh Kishore are suspended from practice with immediate effect,” the interim order stated.
