In the 2025 Delhi Assembly elections, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) continued to fare better in constituencies with a significant Muslim population as compared to the BJP and the Congress. Out of the 11 constituencies with a sizable Muslim demographic, the AAP secured eight seats, confirming its continued dominance in these areas. However, the party’s vote share experienced a marginal decline, largely due to a split in Muslim votes among various parties.
Meanwhile, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) emerged victorious in Mustafabad, defeating three Muslim candidates from Congress, AAP, and the All India Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul-Muslimeen (AIMIM) – Ali Mahndi, Adil Ahmed Khan, and Tahir Hussain, respectively. The contest in Mustafabad saw a division of votes among the three Muslim candidates, paving the way for BJP’s candidate, Bisht, to secure a commanding victory with a margin of 17,578 votes.
In the 2020 Assembly elections, Muslim voters largely supported AAP. However, this time, their votes were spread across different parties, which slightly diluted AAP’s dominance, but not enough to alter its strong presence in Muslim-majority constituencies.
Notably, AAP candidates like Imran Hussain (Ballimaran), Aaley Mohammed Iqbal (Matia Mahal), Amanatullah Khan (Okhla), and Chaudhary Zubair Ahmad (Seelampur) emerged victorious.
Despite losing Mustafabad, where the contest was split three ways, AAP managed to maintain its influence in the majority of Muslim constituencies. In 2020, AAP had swept all seven Muslim-majority seats, including Okhla, Babarpur, Mustafabad, Seelampur, Matia Mahal, Ballimaran, and Sangam Vihar. The loss of Mustafabad was attributed to the three-way fight between AAP, AIMIM, and Congress.
In Mustafabad, Muslim candidates collectively secured 1,12,874 votes, with AIMIM’s Tahir Hussain, who is currently jailed in connection with the 2020 Delhi riots, securing 33,474 votes and finishing third. In other Muslim-majority constituencies like Okhla, Babarpur, Seelampur, Matia Mahal, Ballimaran, and Chandni Chowk, AAP candidates won by considerable margins. Notably, in Okhla, AIMIM’s Shifa-ur-Rehman came in third with 39,558 votes.
The BJP opened its account for the first time in Jangpura with former Congress veteran leader and three time MLA Tarwinder Singh Marwah defeating AAP’s top leader and former Deputy CM Manish Sisodia by a margin of 675 votes.
