ABVP alleges drunk NSUI members vandalised DU students’ union office
New Delhi, July 14
A clash broke out between members of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) after the former accused the latter of vandalising the office of the Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) here.
According to ABVP, the incident occurred around 3 am on July 14 when NSUI’s DUSU vice-president Abhi Dahiya, along with NSUI members Yash Nandal, Rounak Khatri, Siddharth Sheoran and around 40 others, allegedly attacked and ransacked the offices of DUSU president Tushar Dedha, secretary Aparajita, joint secretary Sachin Baisla and the visitors’ room.
An idol of Lord Ram in the president’s office was reportedly damaged, besides a water cooler and printer in the visitor room that were broken.
“The goons first drank alcohol in the office of vice-president Dahiya and then vandalised the offices,” said a guard as claimed by ABVP members.
Condemning the act, Delhi ABVP state secretary Harsh Attri said, “The ABVP strongly condemns this act of vandalism and hooliganism and urges the Delhi University (DU) administration and police to immediately act against the criminal elements involved in it.”
He further said, “We will meet the DU Vice-Chancellor and Delhi Police Commissioner regarding this incident. The ABVP wants that DUSU vice-president Dahiya involved in the act of hooliganism should be immediately removed from his post and arrested by
the police.”
A police official said they had received a complaint in this regard and would register an FIR. “A complaint has been filed at the Maurice Nagar police station. The police will investigate the matter and act accordingly,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (North) MK Meena.
Meanwhile, NSUI president Varun Choudhary has dismissed the allegations. Writing on his X (formerly Twitter) account, Choudhary said, “The NSUI condemns the ABVP’s attempts to divert attention from the critical issue of fake degrees held by their office-bearers at the University of Delhi. ABVP’s fabricated cases of violence, attacks on idols and production of counterfeit degrees are efforts to mislead students and shift focus from their malpractices.”
Choudhary further said, “The ABVP has consistently indulged in violence across the Indian campuses. At the University of Delhi, the members of the ABVP have repeatedly resorted to violence, including thrashing and threatening professors. These actions are not only condemnable but also reveal their true intent to mislead students and cover up their own malpractices.”
Emphasising NSUI’s commitment towards addressing genuine concerns of the students, Choudhary said, “The NSUI is committed to ensuring transparency, truth and justice while focusing on the real issues that affect the students. We urge the authorities to conduct a thorough investigation into the fake degree scandal at DUSU and ensure that those involved in it are held accountable. Our students deserve representatives with integrity, not those with fake degrees and marksheets.”
