Agnipath protest: Serpentine queues in Gurugram, roads headed to Delhi barricaded
Gurugram, June 20
Chaos reigned on the Delhi-Gurugram Expressway today as major traffic congestion was witnessed on Sirhaul toll plaza in the morning due to Bharat Bandh in Delhi.
The Delhi police set up barricades and were checking every vehicle individually, which led to a massive traffic jam in Gurugram at the Sirhaul border. The queue of vehicles kept increasing. The Delhi Police have barricaded the road heading from Gurugram to Delhi at Rajokari and checking almost every vehicle.
Political workers and leaders heading towards Delhi to participate in the protest were detained.
Congress leader Pankaj Dawar said they, along with a few party workers, were heading to Delhi from Gurugram to participate in a protest organised at Jantar Mantar, but they were stopped by the Delhi Police and taken to Vasant Kunj police station. Dawar said they had permission for the protest, despite that the police denied them entry into Delhi. RS Tomar, DCP (traffic) of the Gurugram police, said there was traffic congestion on NH-48 at Sirhaul towards Delhi due to barricaded check points on the Delhi border.
“It was due to checking by the Delhi Police, but we managed. The congestion was eased in about two hours as the commuters were made to use alternative routes via the Mehrauli-Gurugram road, Faridabad Road and Kundli-Manesar-Palwal Expressway (KMP),” said the DCP (Traffic).
He added that vehicles coming from Jaipur side have been diverted from KMP and Panchgaon.
