Tahir Hussain, an accused in the 2020 Delhi riots, was released from the Tihar Jail under heavy police security on Thursday morning to file his nomination papers for the upcoming Delhi Assembly elections.
According to jail sources, Hussain, a former AAP councillor, left the jail around 9:15 am after being granted custody parole by the Delhi High Court.
Hussain is contesting the elections on an All-India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) ticket from the Mustafabad constituency.
The Delhi High Court had earlier allowed him custody parole in connection with a murder case related to the riots, enabling him to complete the nomination process.
Similarly, Shifa-ur-Rahman Khan, an activist charged under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) for her alleged role in the 2020 riots, is also running for the Assembly polls. Khan, who remains incarcerated, also filed her nomination to contest from the Okhla constituency on an AIMIM ticket. She was also granted custody parole from a Delhi court.
