Army Wives’ Welfare Assn wins Mahatma Award

The Army Wives’ Welfare Association (AWWA) has been awarded the Mahatma Award 2024 for its contributions to social welfare and women empowerment.

The Mahatma Award, inspired by the ideals of Mahatma Gandhi, honours individuals and organisations that demonstrate a commitment to social responsibility and community service.

Association president Sunita Dwivedi received the award from Kiran Bedi, former Lt Governor of Puducherry. Through its programmes, the AWWA offers educational scholarships, vocational training and employment opportunities for self-reliance and empowerment among Army wives and widows.

The AWWA has been supporting families of soldiers, focusing on women empowerment through its numerous welfare initiatives. The AWWA’s initiatives are guided by its five key focus areas. These include outreach to widows and next of kin, empowering all Army families by fostering a sense of belonging and ownership within the organisation, increasing the happiness index of the military ecosystem by meeting the aspirations of families and serving personnel alike.
