Cop posted outside minister’s house dies by suicide, 7 booked
His family was facing social boycott in village
A police constable, who was posted outside the residence of Haryana minister Rao Narbir Singh in Gurugram, reportedly died by suicide by consuming some poisonous substance following the alleged social boycott of his family at his native village.
His nephew had married a girl from the same gotra, following which the panchayat decided to boycot his family. The police handed over the body to the family after the autopsy today. An FIR pertaining to abetment to suicide has been registered against seven people, including the sarpanch’s husband, at the Civil Lines Police Station.
The police said the constable had been identified as 49-year-old Jagbir Singh, a resident of Bhoorawas village in Jhajjar district. He had joined the police as a constable in 2014. He previously served in the Jat Regiment of the Army and joined the police after retirement.
According to the police, he was on duty on Monday night and died by consuming some poisonous substance. On Tuesday morning, when other personnel arrived for change of duty, they found Jagbir unconscious. He was taken to a nearby private hospital, where he was declared brought dead.
“During investigation, it was found that constable Jagbir’s nephew had eloped with a girl from his own clan four months ago. The villagers held a panchayat and boycotted his family, causing him distress. He was also facing a case of obtaining a job under a false name,” the investigating officer said.
