Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Thursday inaugurated an automated puzzle car parking facility at the Punjabi Bagh Cremation Ground as part of Sewa Pakhwada, being observed from September 17 to October 2 to celebrate Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s birthday.
She also laid the foundation stone for a similar parking complex at Bharat Darshan Park, Punjabi Bagh.
Delhi Urban Development Minister Ashish Sood, Mayor Raja Iqbal Singh, Deputy Mayor Jai Bhagwan Yadav, Standing Committee Chairperson Satya Sharma, MC Commissioner Ashwani Kumar, MLA Kailash Gangwal, and West Delhi MP Kamaljeet Sehrawat were among the attendees of the event.
While reviewing the Punjabi Bagh facility, the Chief Minister asked officials to ensure that safety and user convenience remained the priorities.
She said earlier governments had stalled growth, leaving Delhi’s infrastructure in poor shape.
“Our policy is not only to lay foundations but also to complete projects on time for public use,” she said, adding that the BJP government was accelerating development across the city.
Stating that parking shortages had long led to traffic snarls and neighbourhood disputes, the CM said automated facilities offered a modern and systematic alternative.
Urban Development Minister Ashish Sood talked about the hardships faced by people living near Ring Road and cremation grounds due to inadequate parking space.
Mayor Raja Iqbal Singh called the Punjabi Bagh complex — constructed at a cost of Rs 31 crore — an example of “technology and good governance”, stating that operations and maintenance had been secured for ten years.
He announced that 20 more automated parking facilities would be established across Delhi to address parking woes.
According to MC Commissioner Ashwani Kumar, the Punjabi Bagh structure could accommodate 225 vehicles using a fully automated system, allowing cars to be parked and retrieved without manual effort.
The Bharat Darshan Park project, where the foundation stone was laid, will have 188 slots across eight modules, with full automation and a budget of Rs 31.65 crore including a decade of maintenance.
The MC also plans to inaugurate an automated multilevel shuttle-type car parking project at M-Block Market, Greater Kailash-I, on Saturday.
The project, costing Rs 63.74 crore, would accommodate 399 cars across seven floors. The facility is fully automated, includes fire safety measures, lifts for cars and passengers, and a façade designated for advertising revenue, which will be partly reinvested in civic improvements. Each car can be retrieved in an average of 150 seconds.
