Her final date with Navjot was meant to be here in the midst of beeps of hospital machines, a stretcher and a sense of deep loss.

Moments after Sandeep spent her last moments with Navjot, his body was taken for the last rites that were performed today. As for Sandeep, she was still coming to terms with the tragic events of a black Sunday.

Never had the family imagined that the couple’s planned outing would end in a fatal crash and a traumatic demise. Relatives of Sandeep said the couple went to Gurdwara Bangla Sahib in Central Delhi to pay obeisance on Sunday morning. Then they had a South Indian lunch at Karnataka Bhawan. Sandeep did not know she was spending her last moments with Navjot who passed away later that day following a crash between his bike and a BMW.

At Navjot’s family home in West Delhi’s Hari Nagar too, an overwhelming sense of grief loomed as relatives, friends and neighbours gathered to catch the last glimpse of their friend, brother and mentor.

For 80-year-old Balwant Singh, a former Air Force officer, the accident came as a shocker. “My son, Navjot, was about to be promoted in some days and the family had planned a trip together after the promotion. But this tragedy has destroyed everything,” he said.

Navjot’s son Navnoor Singh, meanwhile, turned 22 today and said the birthday would forever remain a tragic memory coming close after the date of his father’s untimely demise.

Navjot’s post-mortem was carried out at Deen Dayal Upadhyay (DDU) Hospital from where he was taken to Venkateshwar Hospital in Dwarka’s Sector 12 and then to his Hari Nagar house.

A Deputy Secretary with the Union Finance Ministry’s Department of Economic Affairs, Navjot died in the crash that left his wife seriously injured and still recuperating in the hospital.

The accident took place on Sunday afternoon after a speeding BMW crashed into their bike near the Dhaula Kuan Metro station.

Gurugram-based Gaganpreet, who was driving the BMW, rushed them to a hospital in GTB Nagar, about 19 kms away from the accident spot. The journey took 40 minutes and doctors declared Navjot dead on arrival.

Sandeep was later shifted to another hospital.

Family members of the deceased are still trying to grasp why Gaganpreet decided to take a bleeding Navjot 19 km away when several other options existed in the vicinity.
