BJP Intensifies campaign in MCD Bypolls
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta promises unfulfilled manifesto commitment
As the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) bypolls enter their final stage, the BJP has ramped up its campaign across multiple wards. On Wednesday, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and senior party leaders conducted roadshows, public meetings and community interactions to bolster their outreach.
In the Wazirpur Industrial Area, Gupta said her government would honour all promises made in the BJP's manifesto, including monthly assistance of Rs 2,500 and subsidised LPG cylinders for economically weaker women under the Mahila Samriddhi Yojana. "Not a single promise will remain unfulfilled," she said, addressing a ‘Swabhiman Sabha’ in support of the BJP’s Ashok Vihar candidate, Veena Asija.
Gupta also took aim at the previous AAP government, accusing it of leaving the state’s coffers "empty" and claiming the BJP would need at least a year to stabilise governance after taking office. She told slum residents the government would work towards providing permanent housing, adding, "Infrastructure like roads, drains, toilets, and restoring welfare schemes takes time. We have not discontinued any scheme; instead, we have added new initiatives."
Later, Gupta led a large roadshow in Dakshinpuri Ward, accompanied by MP Ramvir Singh Bidhuri and ward candidate Rohini Raj. Claiming strong public support, she said the BJP was on track to win the ward for the first time. "Standing in Dakshinpuri today, I announce within two years we will transform the three to four surrounding Assembly constituencies and ensure tap water to every household," Gupta declared.
Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva, reviewing campaign efforts in Sangam Vihar-A during Panna Pramukh meetings, accused AAP of planning to distribute liquor during the polls. He cited the seizure of liquor cartons allegedly ordered by AAP as evidence that the party had "lost direction". Sachdeva urged BJP workers to encourage early voting, highlighting the traditionally lower turnout in by-elections.
BJP candidates across all 12 MCD wards conducted door-to-door campaigns on Wednesday, as the party aims to retain public confidence ahead of the November 30 vote.
