BJP MLA alleges selective installation of CCTVs, moves HC
New Delhi, August 24
A BJP MLA has approached the Delhi High Court, accusing the AAP-led Delhi Government of selectively installing CCTV cameras only in areas from where AAP leaders were elected.
The petition, filed by Abhay Verma, the BJP MLA from Laxmi Nagar constituency in East Delhi, is scheduled for a hearing on August 27 before a Bench comprising Acting Chief Justice Manmohan and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela.
Verma’s petition alleges that despite former Deputy CM Manish Sisodia’s announcement of CCTV camera installations in his 2020-21 budget speech, the Delhi Public Works Department Minister was given authority over the installations.
According to Verma, this arrangement led to a “pick-and-choose policy”, where CCTV cameras were only installed in areas represented by ruling party leaders.
The petition also claims that Laxmi Nagar, Verma’s constituency, was “deliberately” excluded from receiving cameras, even though a survey by Bharat Electronics Limited indicated that 2,066 cameras were needed for the area. Verma argues that the lack of cameras is negatively impacting the law and order situation, thereby compromising the safety and security of residents.
