Less than 20 days into power, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) members have already begun pushing for the renaming of certain areas in Delhi.

On Thursday, BJP MLA Neelam Pahalwan proposed renaming Najafgarh in southwest Delhi as 'Nahargarh', claiming that the Mughals had altered its original name.

Pahalwan, who won the recent Assembly polls from Najafgarh defeating AAP's Tarun Kumar by over 29,000 votes, claimed on the floor of Assembly that the renaming effort has been in the works for a long time.

"Najafgarh faced many challenges under Mughal rule. During the 1857 revolt, Raja Nahar Singh fought and brought the Najafgarh region into Delhi’s territory. Despite several attempts, including efforts by MP Parvesh Verma, we have been trying to change the name of Najafgarh to Nahargarh," Pahalwan said. She added that the people of her constituency hope that the BJP-majority Assembly will support this renaming effort.

Notably, Najafgarh’s current name traces back to Mirza Najaf Khan, a Mughal commander in the 18th century who fortified the region during his tenure under Emperor Shah Alam II.

BJP MLA Anil Sharma said that he will meet Speaker Vijender Gupta in the coming days and propose the change of name of village Mohmmadpur in RK Puram to Madhavpuram.

"See the proposal to change the name of Mohammadpur village in the RK Puram Vidhan Sabha constituency had already been passed in the Municipal Corporation. Tomorrow I will be proposing this change in name before the Speaker Sir. It is the demand and wish of the people," Sharma said.

Notably, Deputy Speaker in Delhi Assembly, Mohan Singh Bisht had also declared that he would propose renaming the constituency as either 'Shiv Puri' or 'Shiv Vihar' after winning the high-pitched assembly polls.
