The Delhi Traffic Police in its statement said, “Road Traffic Injuries (RTIs) are often regarded as a serious public health concern. Being one of the main causes of hospital stays and among the top 10 causes of fatalities and disabilities, they have a significant socio-economic impact on society.”
“The primary duty of the Delhi Traffic Police is to ensure efficient and secure flow of traffic on Delhi roads. Thus, the Delhi Traffic Police works to reduce road accidents in addition to overseeing traffic laws on Delhi roads,” it added.
The traffic police also conducted a spatial analysis of accident spots to determine Delhi’s accident-prone areas. The data from January 2024 compared to the same month in the previous year shows a decrease in non-injury, simple and fatal crashes by 36.4 per cent, 2.9 per cent, and 15 per cent, respectively. A mishap in which victims sustained minor injuries but no one was seriously injured was considered to be a simple accident.
Most of the accidents occurred during the day in January 2023. Meanwhile, 29 persons were injured and two died in road accidents at night in January 2024 while no one was killed or sustained injuries during mishaps at night during January 2023.
Drivers of cars, heavy vehicles and two-wheelers were reportedly responsible for most number of accidents last month. While car drivers were found to be at fault in 17 mishaps, heavy-vehicle drivers and two-wheeler riders were responsible for 10 and eight accidents, respectively.
