Capital records season’s hottest day at 43.8°C

The national capital on Tuesday recorded its highest maximum temperature of the season at 43.8 degrees Celsius, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

Meanwhile, Ayanagar and Ridge recorded a maximum temperature of 45.5 and 45 degree Celsius, respectively.

The base station of Safdarjung recorded 43.8 degree Celsius, which is 3.9 degree Celsius above normal. Ridge’s temperature was above normal by 4.7 degree Celsius, the highest deviation recorded at any IMD’s subdivision on June 10.

The IMD has sounded an orange alert for Delhi till Wednesday and a yellow alert for June 12. There is a possibility of light rainfall on June 13 in the national capital. There is a forecast of flow of easterly winds which will lead to drop in temperature. However, the rainfall on June 13 will not be widespread across the city.

On Wednesday, the maximum and minimum temperatures over Delhi are likely to be in the range of 43 to 45 degrees Celsius and 28 to 30 degrees Celsius, respectively. The minimum temperature will be above normal up to 1-2 degrees Celsius and the maximum temperature will be above normal up to 3-5 degree Celsius.

The temperature in June often breaches the 45 degree Celsius mark in Delhi. The all-time record of maximum temperature in June was 46.7 degree Celsius logged on June 17, 1945.

As mercury levels rise, experts are recommending that people drink sufficient water to stay hydrated. People are advised to use ORS, homemade drinks like lassi, torani (rice water), lemon water and buttermilk to keep themselves hydrated.
