Celebrations erupt at BJP office after Rekha named Delhi CM

Wishes pour in from top party leaders, workers dance to dhol beats

On Wednesday, the Delhi BJP officially announced Shalimar Bagh MLA Rekha Gupta as the new Chief Minister of Delhi. With this appointment, Delhi welcomes its fourth woman CM, and the second woman from the BJP to take on the role. Sushma Swaraj was the first woman CM of the national capital in 1998.

Even before the official declaration, party workers had speculated that Gupta would be chosen as the CM as a huge crowd gathered at the Delhi BJP office chanting her name. Excitement was palpable among the party cadre with workers dancing to dhol beats.

After being appointed as the legislative party leader and the Delhi CM, Rekha expressed her gratitude, saying, “I thank my top leadership, PM Modi, party’s national president JP Nadda, Virendra Sachdeva, observers Ravi Shankar and Dhankar, all party workers who blessed me and all MLAs who supported me. I thank everyone...”

Congratulatory messages poured in from BJP leaders, with Defence Minister Rajnath Singh taking to X to offer his best wishes. “Congratulations to Rekha Gupta on being elected as leader of BJP legislative party in Delhi. Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, I am confident that Delhi will become the developed capital of a developed India.”

Congratulating Gupta, BJP national president and MP JP Nadda wrote on X: “Hearty congratulations and best wishes to Rekha Gupta on being elected as the leader of the BJP legislative party. I have full faith that under your able leadership, Delhi will progress towards new heights of development and good governance. Under the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, you will work with full dedication to fulfil the aspirations of the people of Delhi. It will be our resolve to free Delhi from AAP-Da and bring it to the top in the scale of development, facilities and cleanliness”.

Calling it a crucial step for Delhi’s future, Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva posted on X, “Many congratulations and best wishes to Rekha Gupta on being elected as the leader of the Delhi BJP legislative party! #ViksitDelhi #DelhiCM”.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath wrote on X, “Hearty congratulations and best wishes to Rekha Gupta on being elected leader of the legislative party of @BJP4Delhi”.

Congratulating Gupta on X, Satish Poonia, BJP’s state in-charge of Haryana, said: “Heartfelt congratulations and best wishes to Rekha Gupta on being elected as the leader of the BJP legislative party in Delhi.”

Delhi BJP MPs were present at the party office to join in the celebrations. MP Manoj Tiwari said: “Congratulations to Rekha Gupta and Modi. The BJP gave another woman Chief Minister to the country.”

MP Kamaljeet Sehrawat said: “As a woman, I am even happier. Along with her, we will work to fulfil PM Modi’s vision for Delhi.”

MP Bansuri Swaraj said: “I would like to congratulate Rekha Gupta for being appointed as leader of the legislative party. I know that under the leadership of PM Modi, she will mark a new chapter of development in Delhi.”

Extending his wishes to Rekha Gupta, Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee president Devender Yadav, in a video message, said: “Heartfelt congratulations to Rekha Gupta on being appointed as the CM. I hope that under her leadership, the promises made by the BJP to the people of Delhi will be fulfilled. Additionally, as a woman, I hope she will certainly play an important role in restoring the respect of women and empowering them.”

Yadav also wrote on X, saying: “Congratulations to Rekha Gupta on being appointed as the Chief Minister of Delhi. I hope you will rise above party politics, address the issues of Delhi and fulfil the promises made to the people of Delhi.”

Hours prior, as the announcement of the new Delhi CM drew near, excitement surged at the Delhi BJP office. The office was alive with vibrant celebrations as workers danced to dhol beats, shouting slogans like “Jai Shri Ram” and “PM Modi Zindabad”.

Party workers showed immense support for any potential CM, with many ready to celebrate the party’s victory regardless of the individual leader chosen. The premises were adorned with colorful lights and saffron flags, further adding to the festive atmosphere.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah extends wishes

“I extend my heartiest congratulations and best wishes to Rekha Gupta on being elected as the leader of the BJP legislative party. I have full faith that you will work with dedication in the direction of the resolution taken by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to make Delhi one of the top capitals of the world. I am confident that the BJP government, under your leadership, will work day and night to fulfil the hopes and expectations with which the mothers and sisters of Delhi have blessed the BJP,” Union Home Minister Amit Shah wrote on X.
