The Aam Aadmi Party’s Leader of Opposition (LoP) in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), Ankush Narang, has accused BJP Mayor Raja Iqbal Singh of failing to deliver on his Diwali promise to distribute streetlights to all councillors, calling the announcement a jumla (hollow slogan).

In a letter to the Mayor, Narang reminded him that during the October 14 House meeting, he had assured each councillor of 50 streetlights for their wards ahead of Diwali.

“Not a single streetlight has been distributed so far,” the LoP said, alleging that the mayor had made a false and irresponsible declaration in the House without any intent to fulfil it.

Narang noted that councillors had demanded at least 100 streetlights per ward during the meeting, but even the initial commitment of 50 remained unmet. “Diwali has come and gone, even Chhath Puja has passed, yet no councillor has received a light,” he said. “The Mayor’s dishonesty has reached such extremes that he is now lying in a forum as dignified as the House itself.”

Calling the Mayor’s conduct irresponsible, Narang said the BJP had failed to illuminate Delhi during the festival of lights. “They claim to be the defenders of Sanatana Dharma, yet they couldn’t even light up the city on Diwali,” he remarked, adding that the Opposition would continue to raise the issue both on the streets and in the House until the streetlights are provided.
