Chief Justice of India Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai, along with 20 Supreme Court Judges, joined Delhi Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa for a massive tree plantation drive under the ongoing Van Mahotsav-2025 campaign at PBG Ground, Delhi Ridge, on Saturday.

Participating under the Delhi Government’s flagship ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ drive, the CJI emphasised the critical need for balancing development with environmental protection. “Everyone starts getting worried as soon as October arrives,” he said, alluding to Delhi’s severe air pollution during the winters. “While development is important, we must understand the cost at which it comes. Forests, which are a part of humanity’s lineage, do not belong to us alone — they belong to future generations too. They play a vital role in reducing Delhi’s pollution. The Supreme Court has repeatedly stressed the importance of sustainable development and issued landmark advisories on

pollution control.”

Sirsa thanked the CJI and the Judges for lending their support to the campaign.

“Their presence under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visionary Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam campaign reinforces the message that restoring Delhi’s green cover is our collective responsibility,” he said.

The plantation drive aims to increase Delhi’s green cover and raise awareness about air quality and climate action.

The Delhi Government has set a target of planting over 70 lakh saplings this year to tackle the Capital’s deteriorating air quality, and to promote community stewardship of public green spaces.
