CM launches Traders' Welfare Board, plans to redevelop Old Delhi markets
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Wednesday reaffirmed her government’s commitment to the welfare and growth of Delhi’s trading community, announcing the formation of the Delhi Traders Welfare Board—an initiative aimed at safeguarding traders’ interests and boosting commercial activity in the capital.
In a meeting held at the Delhi Secretariat with representatives of the Bhartiya Udyog Mandal, CM Gupta said the new board would function as a statutory body and act as a bridge between the government and the business community.
“The Delhi Government is determined to create a secure, fear-free and supportive environment for our traders. We want Delhi’s businesses to thrive, as increased trade will enhance revenue, which in turn will contribute to the development of Delhi,” said the Chief Minister.
She said the Delhi Traders Welfare Board would not only resolve grievances but also provide social security, emergency assistance and streamlined business support. Notably, nine of the 15 board members have been drawn directly from the trading community, ensuring authentic representation and real-time feedback from the ground.
The CM also unveiled her government’s blueprint for the redevelopment of markets in Old Delhi, aimed at revitalising historic commercial hubs while preserving their local character. The plan includes infrastructure upgrades, improved logistics and the development of large warehouses on Delhi’s outskirts to reduce congestion in market areas.
“There are no plans to shift Delhi’s markets elsewhere,” Gupta clarified, responding to concerns in some quarters.
She also criticised previous administrations, accusing them of exploiting traders and disrupting the city’s commercial heritage. In contrast, she said, the current government had empowered traders by bringing them directly into the policymaking process.
In addition to shaping policy, the board will also manage welfare funds and provide compensation during emergencies such as natural disasters, fires and floods. Gupta assured traders that they “are no longer alone,” and that the government “stands firmly with them to ensure their security, welfare, and prosperity.”
The Chief Minister concluded by saying the Delhi Traders Welfare Board is not merely a governance body but “a symbol of the government’s trust and long-term partnership with the trading community.”
