CM Rekha Gupta launches Rs 8 cr project to shift overhead cables underground in Shalimar Bagh

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta launched a pilot project on Saturday to shift overhead electricity cables underground in the BH Block of Janta Flats Colony, located in her Shalimar Bagh constituency. The project, with an outlay of Rs 8 crore, is expected to be completed within three months. It involves the removal of 5 km of overhead high-tension (HT) and low-tension (LT) wires, which will be replaced with 10 kilometers of underground LT (440V) cables and 1.2 km of HT (11KV) cables. Additionally, 23 new double-source feeder pillar boxes will be installed to ensure uninterrupted 24X7 electricity supply in all weather conditions.

Speaking at the launch event, CM Gupta stated, “The project marks the beginning of a broader transformation in Delhi’s power distribution system. Underground cabling will make electricity supply more reliable, safe, and efficient while also enhancing the aesthetics of the area.”

She noted that this initiative aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Smart Infrastructure Mission, with a dedicated budget of Rs 100 crore allocated for a phased rollout across the Capital. “This is just the beginning. Our government is committed to freeing every neighbourhood in Delhi from the dangerous and unsightly web of overhead wires,” she added.

Power Minister Ashish Sood emphasised the long-term benefits of the project, stating, “Once completed, this system will ensure uninterrupted, safe electricity supply, even during extreme weather conditions. It’s a significant leap toward a modern, resilient energy infrastructure for Delhi.”

CM Gupta congratulated the Power Department and Tata Power-DDL for their efforts, reiterating the government’s commitment to transforming Delhi into a clean, secure, and energy-efficient capital. “We are determined to make Delhi a benchmark city for sustainable and citizen-centric utility services,” she said.

The pilot project is being executed by Tata Power Delhi Distribution Limited (Tata Power-DDL), which supplies electricity to areas in North Delhi. Tata Power-DDL’s Chief Executive Officer Dwijadas Basak, who was present at the launch, described the project as a first-of-its-kind model inspired by power infrastructure in leading global cities. “The goal is to create a scalable and replicable system that can be extended to other parts of Delhi,” he said.
