Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Friday visited Azadpur Mandi, Asia’s largest wholesale market, and came down heavily on the previous government for its “utter neglect” of the mandi’s condition. Calling it a “garbage heap,” the CM announced a slew of measures aimed at transforming the mandi into a modern, clean, and corruption-free hub for traders and farmers.

During her surprise inspection, CM Gupta interacted with traders, workers, and visitors, and expressed strong displeasure over the lack of basic amenities, poor sanitation, inadequate security, and alleged rampant corruption.

“For the last 10 years, they turned Azadpur Mandi into a garbage dump. Those who promised to turn Delhi into London or Paris should come and face the stench here,” said the CM, directing sharp criticism at the previous administration.

She announced several immediate and long-term reforms, including installation of CCTV cameras at all entry points, deployment of additional sanitation staff within a week, and the setup of a compactor and green waste processing plant within the mandi to address hygiene issues. A health facility offering emergency medical care will be opened at Kisan Bhawan and an Atal Canteen will provide full meals to workers for just Rs 5.

The Chief Minister also ordered immediate renovation of broken roads, sheds, and public toilets, and said drinking water stations would be set up across the mandi to provide relief to labourers working in harsh conditions.

A dedicated committee will oversee all redevelopment works and ensure time-bound implementation. The mandi’s management is set to be restructured, with a new team and stringent anti-corruption checks. Gupta also called for a full audit of the last 10 years of mandi budgets to probe alleged financial irregularities.

“This mandi is not just a market — it is Delhi’s lifeline,” Gupta said. “We are committed to restoring its dignity and ensuring it works efficiently, safely, and transparently for farmers, traders, and consumers alike.”
