Committed to preserving national capital’s heritage, greenery: L-G

In a concerted effort to tackle long-standing water management and drainage issues in the city, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena on Tuesday conducted a joint inspection of key sites across the Capital. The review focused on drain cleaning, water conservation, infrastructure development and heritage restoration.

The inspection began at the Najafgarh Drain near Inderlok Metro station and continued through significant areas, including Prembari Pul in Shalimar Bagh, Labour Chowk at Singhalpur village, CA slum area at Gol Chakkar, AU Jhuggi Road near VIPS College, Munak canal and Haiderpur water treatment plant.

Highlighting the pace of recent work, L-G Saxena said: “In the past two months, more drain cleaning has been done than in several years. We are committed to preserving Delhi’s heritage and greenery while transforming it into a clean and well-planned national capital.”

Reviewing the restoration efforts at Sheesh Mahal Park in Shalimar Bagh, the L-G called it a site of “historical and cultural importance.” He noted that after years of neglect, the restoration work was now being carried out jointly by the DDA and the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). It is expected to be completed within two months.

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta instructed officials to build roads on both sides of the Munak Canal and prepare a comprehensive action plan for water purification and conservation. She emphasised the urgent need to restructure Delhi’s fragmented water and sewage systems, saying, “The entire system — from water sources and distribution to STPs and WTPs — needs integrated planning. Our goal is not just to meet deadlines, but to make sure citizens see real progress on the ground.”

She also stressed that the inspection aimed to resolve chronic issues with proper sanitation, reliable water supply and improved road infrastructure. “Delhi deserves world-class infrastructure, and this government is determined to deliver it through transparency and coordinated action,” the CM said.

MP Praveen Khandelwal and officials from the DDA, MCD, PWD and the Haryana Government were also present during the inspection. The L-G and the CM reiterated that all departments must work with urgency and commitment to deliver long-term improvements in Delhi’s urban systems.
