Cong’s Yadav slams discoms for arbitrary power purchases, calls for transparency

Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee (DPCC) president Devender Yadav raised concerns over the deepening power crisis in the Capital, attributing it to corruption in the arbitrary purchase of electricity. He alleged that power distribution companies (discoms) are attempting to buy expensive electricity without a tender, which will increase financial pressure on consumers.

Yadav highlighted that a petition is currently under review by the Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission (DERC), seeking permission to procure 400 MW of power between May and July 2025 at peak hours—between 12 noon and 2 pm and from 8 pm to 12 midnight. He claimed that this process indicates large-scale corruption, with financial interests being served at the expense of the public.

Furthermore, he accused the BJP government of appointing a consultant to justify an increase in power tariffs, warning that this could lead to a sharp rise in electricity bills. He said discoms are aiming to establish a monopoly over the energy market in Delhi, which would make electricity significantly more expensive for residents.

Yadav also criticised the previous Kejriwal government, alleging that its failure to issue new tariff orders for years has now prompted power companies to recover old losses by burdening consumers. He warned that this alleged collusion between discoms and the government could result in a massive spike in electricity bills in the coming months.

Calling for transparency in the power sector, Yadav accused power companies of misusing their authority by arbitrarily purchasing electricity at inflated prices. He urged Delhi residents to raise their voices against these alleged irregularities and demand accountability from the government.

The growing power cuts in the city, despite summer not yet reaching its peak, have sparked concerns about an impending energy crisis.
