A Delhi court is likely to decide on February 3 whether to summon Congress MP Shashi Tharoor in a criminal defamation case filed by BJP leader Rajeev Chandrasekhar.

Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Paras Dalal adjourned the matter on Friday, stating that a witness statement from a Thiruvananthapuram court was still awaited. “Matter be fixed for orders on summoning/issue of process on February 3,” the judge noted.

Chandrasekhar has alleged that Tharoor defamed him by making “false and derogatory imputations” during a television interview, accusing him of bribing voters in Thiruvananthapuram.

According to the complaint, these statements were made with the intent to harm Chandrasekhar’s reputation and influence the outcome of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, despite Tharoor allegedly knowing the claims were false.

“The interview(s) was/were published by various news channels as well as on social media platforms at the behest of the proposed accused and resulted in loss of reputation of the complainant in the society, which ultimately resulted in the complainant losing the 2024 Lok Sabha polls,” the complaint said.

The court had earlier taken cognisance of the complaint on September 21, 2024.
