Delhi Assembly to have portraits of Savarkar, Dayanand, Malaviya
In a landmark decision reflecting deep respect for India’s freedom fighters and reformers, the General Purposes Committee of the Delhi Legislative Assembly, chaired by Speaker Vijender Gupta, unanimously passed a resolution to install portraits of Veer Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, Maharshi Dayanand Saraswati and Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya within the Assembly premises.
The resolution, adopted during a meeting held at the Delhi Vidhan Sabha, seeks to commemorate the extraordinary contributions of these national icons to India’s freedom movement, social reforms and educational awakening.
Speaker Gupta said the Assembly remains committed to preserving the legacy of visionary leaders who shaped the nation’s cultural, moral and intellectual foundations.
The proposal was formally moved by MLA Abhay Verma, a member of the committee, who emphasised the lasting relevance of these leaders’ philosophies. He noted that honouring them with portraits within the Vidhan Sabha complex would serve as a powerful reminder of the ideals of patriotism, democratic service and social uplift that they championed.
The committee also gave specific approval to install a portrait of Veer Savarkar, acknowledging his well-recognised contributions to India’s freedom struggle. Members agreed that the Assembly has a tradition of displaying portraits of great freedom fighters and that including Savarkar is a fitting addition in that legacy.
“This decision is more than symbolic. It’s a reflection of the Assembly’s commitment to upholding democratic values and inspiring future generations,” said Speaker Vijender Gupta.
“These leaders transformed Indian society through sacrifice, scholarship, and visionary reform. Their memory must be preserved in spaces that represent public service and governance,” he said.
The meeting was attended by several key members, including Deputy Speaker Mohan Singh Bisht, MLAs Abhay Verma, Chaudhary Zubair Ahmad, Manoj Kumar Shokeen, Raj Kumar Bhatia, Tilak Ram Gupta and Veer Singh Dhingan, all of whom endorsed the resolution.
The portraits are expected to be installed in prominent locations within the Vidhan Sabha premises in the coming months, marking a new chapter in the Assembly’s efforts to honour India’s historical figures and instill civic pride among citizens.
