All seven BJP Members of Parliament (MPs) from Delhi have presented a memorandum to Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, proposing four major infrastructure projects designed to address the city’s severe pollution and traffic congestion problems.

The MPs highlighted their vision for improving Delhi’s infrastructure, specifically targeting the reduction of the number of vehicles entering the city from neighbouring states. These measures, they believe, would help alleviate both the city’s air quality crisis and its notorious traffic jams.

Harsh Malhotra, Union Minister of State, addressed mediapersons after the meeting, outlining the details of the proposals. He was joined by Delhi BJP MPs including Manoj Tiwari, Ramvir Singh Bidhuri, Yogendra Chandolia, Praveen Khandelwal, Kamaljeet Sehrawat and Bansuri Swaraj, as well as Kuljit Chahal, Vice Chairman of the New Delhi Municipal Council. Malhotra emphasised the urgency of the proposals, stating, “Delhi’s residents are facing life-threatening pollution and the city’s traffic congestion is costing time and fuel. These projects are designed to reduce pollution and ease traffic pressure.”

The MPs believe the proposed projects would not only improve commuting for Delhiites but also reduce the overall number of vehicles entering the city, thus helping to decongest its streets. Malhotra also pointed to the success of ongoing infrastructure initiatives, such as the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway and the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, both of which are set to significantly reduce travel times. “Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Gadkari, 55,000 km of national highways have been constructed in the past decade and we are committed to continuing this progress,” he added.

The four proposed projects include a Tunnel from Shiv Murti to Nelson Mandela Marg, which aims to reduce travel time from Delhi Airport to the city centre from one hour to just 7-8 minutes, helping to ease a major bottleneck in the capital’s traffic flow.

Another key proposal is the Connecting Delhi-Amritsar-Katra Expressway to KMP Expressway, which would allow travellers heading to Amritsar or Katra to bypass Delhi entirely. This would provide direct access to the airport and Gurgaon without needing to enter the city, reducing congestion significantly.

The third project is to connect UER-2 with the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway, creating a direct route for vehicles travelling from Delhi to Uttar Pradesh and Noida. This would further alleviate traffic by bypassing the city.

Lastly, the extension of UER-2 near Alipur would link up with the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway near Tronica City, offering an alternative route for vehicles heading to Uttar Pradesh and helping to ease traffic in Delhi.

Malhotra concluded by saying Gadkari had assured the MPs these proposals would be considered and appropriate action would be taken soon. If approved, these projects could provide significant relief to Delhi residents, easing both traffic congestion and pollution levels across the city.
