Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Thursday assured that devotees observing Chhath Puja this year would be able to offer prayers to the Sun God in a Yamuna free from froth and pollution. She said the river, which was once covered in layers of foam and filth during the previous regime, witnessed remarkable improvement under the current government’s efforts.
Gupta inspected preparations for the upcoming Chhath festival at the Kalindi Kunj (Madanpur Khadar) ghat and reviewed the on-site water quality tests conducted by the Delhi Jal Board’s Treatment Plant and Quality Control Wing. Expressing satisfaction over the results, she said, “This time, there is no froth in the Yamuna and devotees will be able to perform rituals with full devotion.”
According to the Chief Minister, the current dissolved oxygen (DO) level in the Yamuna was 4.0 milligrams per litre, a sufficient level for the river suitable for aquatic life, compared to previous years when it had fallen below zero. She said the phosphate level, which was the main cause of froth formation, had been reduced to 0.2 from earlier levels above 2.
Gupta also clarified that de-foamers and other chemical processes used to control froth were completely eco-friendly and certified, posing no harm to the environment or aquatic organisms. “Some people are spreading misleading information through old videos. I urge citizens to see the reality themselves,” she said.
Tourism and Development Minister Kapil Mishra, who accompanied the Chief Minister, said the government was committed to ensuring that the Chhath Mahaparv was celebrated with devotion and grandeur. “Delhi’s traditions and festivals are part of its identity and strengthening them is the top priority of the government,” Mishra said.
