Delhi police officer arrested for accepting Rs 15,000 bribe
The Delhi Police Vigilance Unit arrested assistant sub-inspector Rakesh Kumar, stationed at Hauz Qazi Police Station, on Tuesday, for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 15,000.
The arrest stemmed from a complaint by a resident of Bazar Sita Ram, who alleged that Kumar had demanded the bribe to avoid falsely implicating him in a criminal case.
Based on the complaint, an FIR has been registered under Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act at the Vigilance Police Station.
According to officials, the complainant approached the Vigilance Branch on Tuesday, stating Kumar had called him to visit the police station at 12:30 pm to deliver the bribe. The complainant provided Rs 15,000 in 30 notes of Rs 500 each for a trap operation.
At the designated time, the Vigilance team was deployed outside Hauz Qazi Police Station. The complainant entered the station, then exited with Kumar, signalling that the bribe had been paid.
As the Vigilance team moved in to apprehend him, Kumar allegedly threw the money into the air. Due to the heavy public movement in the area, bystanders reportedly took Rs 5,000, while the remaining Rs 10,000 was recovered at the scene. Kumar was arrested and will be produced at Rouse Avenue Court, police said on Tuesday.
The Vigilance Unit has urged citizens to report incidents of police bribery by calling the helpline number 1064.
