For the first time, the National Capital would host the prestigious All India Speakers’ Conference, set to take place on August 24-25 at the Delhi Legislative Assembly. In the lead-up to the event, Speaker of the Delhi Assembly, Vijender Gupta, has convened a high-level meeting on Wednesday to review the preparations.
The meeting would be attended by the Chief Secretary of Delhi, the Commissioner of Police and senior officials from the departments of Finance, PWD, Home, Health, Art and Culture, and IT, along with officers from the Delhi Legislative Assembly Secretariat. A joint inspection of the premises was conducted on Tuesday by senior officials from the Assembly and the Public Works Department to ensure arrangements were being done in a smooth manner.
This year’s conference holds significance as it commemorates 100 years since Vitthalbhai Jhaverbhai Patel was elected as the first Indian Speaker (then titled President) of the Central Legislative Assembly on August 24, 1925. His election marked a turning point in India’s parliamentary history, and the 2025 edition of the conference would pay tribute to his lasting legacy in strengthening democratic institutions.
The two-day event would be inaugurated by the Union Home Minister and would conclude with an address by the Speaker of the Lok Sabha. The Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, Union Cabinet Ministers, and Speakers and Deputy Speakers from State Assemblies across India are also expected to attend.
Key discussions during the conference would focus on reinforcing parliamentary democracy, improving legislative procedures, fostering cooperative federalism and exploring the use of artificial intelligence to enhance legislative efficiency.
A special exhibition chronicling India’s democratic evolution and highlighting Vitthalbhai Patel’s contributions will be inaugurated during the conference. Additionally, a documentary on his life and vision will be screened as part of the event.
The Delhi Legislative Assembly Secretariat has stated that all necessary efforts are being made to ensure the smooth and successful conduct of the conference, which it has described as a landmark in the country’s parliamentary tradition.
