On the occasion of Nirjala Ekadashi on Friday, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta inaugurated a “Water ATM” at the BL Block Government School in Shalimar Bagh Assembly Constituency, marking the beginning of a citywide initiative to provide clean and cold drinking water during the summer season. The event was also attended by Cabinet Minister Pravesh Verma, along with local residents, school staff and students.

Calling the launch symbolic and significant, CM Gupta said, “It is meaningful that we are starting the installation of Water ATMs from a government school in Delhi on Nirjala Ekadashi, to ensure access to safe and cool drinking water during the summer season.” She and the Water Minister also distributed water bottles to schoolgirls present at the event.

Emphasising the importance of water service in Indian culture, the CM noted, “While water is sold abroad, in India, offering cold water to passers-by is our tradition. Our government is committed to ensuring that no one should face difficulty in accessing drinking water — whether it is a passer-by, a street vendor, a daily wage worker or a student.”

As part of the initiative, Water ATMs will be installed not only in school campuses but also at key public locations across Delhi, benefitting both students and the general public. The CM reaffirmed her government’s commitment to inclusive welfare. “I do not consider myself a CM or a minister, but a humble servant of Delhi. Serving the people is both my duty and my dharma. When people say that ‘Delhi Badal Rahi Hai,’ that is the biggest reward and source of satisfaction for us,” she added.
