Diwali has officially been inscribed in the UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list, prompting widespread celebration and pride across the country. Delhi’s Minister for Art, Culture, Language and Tourism, Kapil Mishra, termed the recognition a historic moment for India’s cultural identity.
Mishra said the global acknowledgement reflected the depth of India’s spiritual traditions and the enduring cultural significance of Diwali. He also credited PM Modi’s continued efforts in securing the honour. The formal announcement of the inscription will be made on December 10 at the Red Fort, where large-scale celebrations are being planned.
In response to the recognition, the Delhi Government is organising citywide events, including special illumination of government buildings, lighting and decoration across major roads and a massive lamp-lighting ceremony. A Diwali celebration will also be held at Dilli Haat on Wednesday, which will be attended by the Chief Minister and the Cabinet.
