The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has completed a tunnelling task under the Red Line at Pulbangash as part of its Phase-IV expansion, officials said on Sunday. The work was carried out below an active metro corridor without stopping train movement on the line.
According to officials, the tunnel is part of the extension of the underground section of the Mukundpur–Maujpur corridor. The team adopted a method that allowed digging under the tracks while keeping the line open for daily operations. The agency used monitoring systems to track the behaviour of the ground and structures above the work site during the entire process.
Work at Pulbangash involved creating a passage below the up and down tracks of the Red Line.
Officials said the depth of the tunnel and the location of the existing system required a controlled excavation plan. Regular alerts fed into the control system from sensors placed around the site kept the operations team informed about any ground movement.
The tunnel is part of a larger plan to link different sections of Phase-IV. The Mukundpur–Maujpur corridor is one of the three approved priority corridors, along with the Janakpuri West–RK Ashram and Aerocity–Tughlaqabad lines.
The corridors aim to improve connectivity in areas that are currently linked by road but not covered by metro services.
Officials noted that after the completion of the tunnelling task, the next step will involve lining, track laying and installation of systems.
Work across Phase-IV is underway at multiple points in the city, including elevated and underground sections. Each site has its own set of clearances, utility shifts and traffic plans.
Officials said that the Pulbangash activity shows that underground construction can continue near active tracks with proper planning and monitoring.
The DMRC plans to finish key segments of Phase-IV in the coming years. Once completed, the new corridors will add more capacity and reduce travel time for passengers using the network.
