A purported video of the incident shows the victim, identified as Nikki, engulfed in flames as she stumbled down the stairs of her house before collapsing on the floor.

According to the police, the incident took place on Thursday night. Nikki’s elder sister Kanchan, who is also married in the same family, alleged that both of them was being tortured for dowry.

Nikki tied the knot with Vipin in December 2016. The torture allegedly began within six months of the marriage, she alleged.

Despite the family giving substantial dowry, including an SUV, a motorcycle and cash, her in-laws allegedly kept demanding more. Kanchan claimed that Nikki’s in-laws asked for Rs 36 lakh. Even after providing another car, the torture and assaults continued.

Disturbing videos from the night of the incident show Vipin, shirtless, along with another woman, dragging Nikki by her hair.

Moments later, Nikki is seen walking downstairs while on fire, with severe burns clearly visible. Bystanders can be seen throwing water on her, to help soothe her burns.

Kanchan alleged that Vipin was having an extramarital relationship, which often triggered violent confrontations whenever Nikki questioned him.

On February 11, Nikki was reportedly attacked at her workplace. Though a local panchayat attempted to mediate, the abuse resumed once she returned to her husband’s home.

On Thursday night, Nikki was admitted to a local hospital with severe burns and later referred to Safdarjung Hospital. However, she died on the way.

Sudhir Kumar, Additional DCP (Greater Noida), confirmed that a case has been registered based on the sister’s complaint.

“Vipin has been arrested. We are searching for the woman’s father-in-law, mother-in-law and brother-in-law, who have also been named in the FIR,” he said.
