DU student working as newspaper hawker killed in hit and run

A 19-year-old Delhi University student working as a newspaper hawker died in a hit-and-run accident near the RTO office in Rohini early on Saturday morning, officials said on Monday.

The deceased has been identified as Rishal Singh, a resident of Budh Vihar. Rishal was on his way to distribute newspapers when an unidentified vehicle hit him on the road dividing Sectors 15 and 16.

According to the police, a PCR call was received at around 6:30 am about the accident. “After getting information, a team reached the spot and found a broken bicycle along with newspapers scattered on the road. The injured had already been shifted to a hospital where doctors declared him dead n arrival,” a police official said.

Singh was pursuing his graduation from Delhi University. He also worked as a newspaper distributor in the morning, the police said.

“Initial investigations suggest that an unidentified vehicle hit him, leading to fatal injuries. A case was registered under Sections 281 and 106(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS),” the official said.

“Efforts are being made to trace the vehicle and the accused driver. We urge anyone who witnessed the incident to come forward and assist in the investigation,” the officer said.
